Amidst protests in various cities staged by the Karni Sena against Padmaavat, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's grand spectacle with a soul has opened to heartwarming numbers in the opening weekend. The film has entered the coveted ₹100 Crore club in just its first weekend. Trade expert Taran Adarsh took to social media to share the figures.
Protests... Disturbances... No screening in few states... Yet, #Padmaavat does EXCELLENT biz in its extended weekend... The film lost out on substantial biz [approx ₹ 35 cr / ₹ 37 cr], but the SUPERB trending in other circuits helped put up a MAJESTIC total...

Well, the film has smoothly cemented its position in the Rs 100 Crore club by amassing ₹114 Crore at the domestic box-office.
The Shahid Kapoor-Deepika Padukone-Ranveer Singh starrer has been in the news ever since it went on floors. The Karni Sena has been the prime group who have been vehemently opposing it, so much so that their vandalism also resulted in Bhansali getting slapped by their members during one of his shooting schedules. Few state governments (Rajasthan, MP, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Haryana) jumped in to throw spanners, but the intervention of the Supreme Court seeked by Bhansali and Viacom 18 (co-producer) enabled it to finally see the light of day.
It opened on a very slow note on Day 1, but picked up towards the evening. The numbers would have been considerably more if no fear psychosis had engulfed the people in many parts of the nation and the film would have had a clean release.
The film has also received fairly good reviews from most sections of the media. For those who've come in late, SpotboyE.com Editor Vickey Lalwani gave it a 4-star rating.
And we certainly don't know what the Karni Sena achieved in disrupting the law and order. The eerie silence of the CMs of the opposing states was equally inexplicable.
